I finished it but NOT FOR ME. I would categorize this as body horror (and I'm not a fan of horror). I picked this up because of Cory Doctorow's review of it. It seemed interesting. The lead character is unsympathetic and seems like someone who would suck your emotional and financial resources dry before moving on - just like her son. If I ran into her in real life I would run the other way. The dog was cool.

Caught up in ‘ZooFlu’, an illness which allows human-animal communication, the country dissolves into mania. Jean’s family begins to break down, redefines itself, and breaks again, until she takes the final step away from it.
This is a story of what would happen, for better or for worse, if we knew every creatures thoughts all of the time

Probably excellent, shouldn't have read it during the pandemic.

Simply phenomenal. Incredibly gripping, deeply moving, gritty and heartbreaking. Writers, take note: THIS is how you do a talking animal story. I will accept no other example.

I genuinely just had no clue what was going on half the time, and the other half I spent feeling a whole array of weird emotions. I appreciate what the book was trying to do and the weirdness was captivating in its own way, but overall it kind of missed the mark for me.

Были у бабушки внучка и жучка. Но никакой репки вытянуть не получилось. 3 звезды за красочные описания алкоголизма и в целом за идею.
