It’s entertaining for sure and over the top satirical, but still a relevant portrayal of kafkaesque office politics, presenteeism, abuse of power, micromanagement and corporate bullshit jobs. It captures the kind of melancholy and angst young people feel when they first step into an open plan office. As a cultural critique, it’s of course very black and white and superficial. More nuanced and complex Japanese characters would have made it more insightful.  I don't think a book like this could be as successful today, given how insensitive it is towards Japanese culture.
