This book follows three generations of Palestinian women now living in Brooklyn, and the interconnectedness of their shared struggles within a patriarchal society.

It’s a story about a teenager chasing after the hazy and confusing memories of her deceased parents, about her mother’s loneliness after following the stranger she married across the world, and about her grandmother’s role in perpetuating the abuse that was done to her.

It’s a tough read, and my heart went out to these characters. The book does a good job of highlighting the struggles of refugee families living in the US, and of the dynamics of immigrant communities struggling with wanting to both succeed in a new country, and not lose their cultural identities. It also paints a really vivid picture of generational trauma and its far-reaching impact.

I listened to this in audiobook format, and I have to say the narrators did a really good job. The character voices, the use of multiple narrators, it all worked really well to make the story come to life.

I'm glad this book exists for people who need it. But it was a drudge of a book, not well-written except maybe to a very specific target audience.  That does not impact my sympathy for anyone in any similar situation, of course.

I deeply admire the courage it took to write this book and tell this story—as someone from the very Palestinian-American culture about which she writes, who has herself experienced many of the horrible things she describes, Etaf Rum has put herself at great risk by doing so. Five stars for that bravery and effort.

However, something about the book itself didn’t work as well for me as I was hoping. A lot of the characters lack nuance, and there is a fair amount of “telling, not showing” going on when the reverse might have been more powerful and effective. And the repetition! My reading experience really dragged toward the end, likely because it felt like everything had already been said.

I do look forward to reading more of what Rum writes in the future, though, as she continues to mature as a writer. She has important things to say.
