This was a rough one, and I was surprised that it was on Jenna Bush Hager's reading list, but I'm probably judging her unfairly based on her father. I thought the book unfolded very well, and I will definitely read this author again. Lots of digging fingernails into legs, though. Maybe that was on purpose to connect the generations of women?

I think it was really good but I also maybe wouldn’t recommend it to everyone because of the strong themes. I do wonder how much is based off of the author’s life because it was interesting reading her end thoughts about the book and it seems like it is really semi autobiographical. I think more of it is about her life then I initially thought. It was interesting to hear how she wrote this as a story fiction because she was afraid of what her family might think but yet she was also trying to break the silence and balance that.

a much needed slap in the face : "il aurait fallu bien plus qu'une seule femme pour changer les choses. il aurait fallu toutes les femmes que comptait ce monde"
the hard part is how to save the women like farida who continue to perpetuate the generational trauma

I was straight up bawling my eyes over this book. It really shows the dangers of misogynistic culture being inbedded into religion and twisting it's words. This book made me so mad at the men and the current world we live in.  Not much has changed but I hope one day as a woman myself I can make my own choices without having a finger pointed at me just for existing. A beautiful book which made me super emotional. Highly recommend pick it up but be warned there is a lot of triggering topics and contents in the book.

A scathing yet heartfelt critique about the traditions of religion that hold people back from living and loving. A story about how pride is the fall of man and about how women are worthy, capable, and worth so much more than the patriarchy allows them to believe. This book gives us an inside look at Palestinian home life and tradition and allows us to see both the good and the bad that this tradition represents, particularly in the lives and minds of women.

Also, I have an ARC copy of this book and there are several grammar and spelling issues that I noticed which I assumed are not in the final published copy of the text. This assumption led me not to alter my ranking based on these errors.
