Good book with lots of twists. I went in blind and enjoyed it. Pretty unsatisfying ending in my opinion but it did keep me guessing.

I'm not entirely sure how to rate this one yet. It kept me hooked and wondering what was coming next the whole time. At no point could I anticipate how/when/what was about to happen, which I appreciated and I don't think that the explanations/reveals were so out there that they could only be in a fictional book but some were really out there. That said, I don't think I liked the ending very much but I'm not sure if more or less of what we got would have satisfied me. I wouldn't rate it low just because the ending didn't satisfy me when for the whole journey there I was engrossed and needing to read the next chapter. I think I'm going to have to sit with this one though.

Her trip on the luxury ocean liner RMS Atlantica is supposed to be the vacation of a lifetime, but when Caz wakes up to find that every other person on the ship seems to have vanished, it becomes a waking nightmare instead.

It's a good thing I went on my first cruise before I read this book. Partly because it makes it easier to visualize the setting, and partly I probably would have been more anxious about wandering around its deserted decks or corridors late at night had I had scenes from this book playing through my mind.

As it is, the author does a great job playing the inherent eeriness of an empty ship - the vast empty spaces, the thousands of tables and rooms set up for people who've vanished, and the meagre feet of metal keeping its four passengers from the great cold depths beneath. The genre of this book is a bit hard to define - it's meant to be a thriller, but I'd consider it horror. Over the course of the story, we see four people break down from psychological torture in claustrophobic detail.

However, suspension of disbelief is a bit tough with this book. There's so much unrealistic technological stuff happening that I decided to pretend it's set in the near future. The utter disregard displayed toward Caz and her fellow stranded passengers' rights to freedom and privacy are really beyond the pale - I swung between being indignant over how frustrating and unrealistic it was and being horrified over everyone's mental disintegration.

The final chapter just pissed me off though. Rating this book was tough, so I've just decided to split the difference and give it two and a half stars.

I started reading this after Marc Sebastian’s followers chose it on the world cruise. Thanks to Atria Books for sponsoring him!

I have mixed feelings about this book. If I had been reading a hard copy, I would have chucked it across the room upon reading the first major twist. The pacing kept me going, but I had a big chip on my shoulder for the rest of the book. I felt as manipulated as our main character did the whole way through. After putting the readers through what they did, the twist ending felt like a slap in the face.

Still, I like a thriller, and I was on the edge of my proverbial seat. I just wish I didn’t feel so manipulated.

A must read thriller of the season for sure. This had me on the edge of my seat and I felt like I was there.

My first Will Dean and it won't be my last. Thanks Atria for a copy of this!
