Adored it. A joy- laughed out loud more times than is proper and not sorry.

Funny and touching and very on-point. Eric is a wonderful storyteller, and the book was especially enjoyable as an audiobook (a format I usually find less engaging). Neighbors wondered why I was laughing so much while pulling weeds!

Oh lordy. I don't even know how to start describing this book. I guess it's mostly the memoir of a black, gay, Christian writer and how he grows into and "becomes" each of those descriptors. And also, it's literally laugh out loud funny throughout a lot of the book, though a little tear-inducing in parts. (Despite the sub-title, this has almost nothing to do with politics, fyi.)
I enjoyed it. 4.5 stars.

Phenomenal book. Laugh out loud funny and poignant and lyrically written. A joy from start to finish.

I was a little slow getting into this audiobook read by the author. It can take a chapter to get acclimated, but once I did, I thoroughly enjoyed this book on sass, self, satire and sanity.
R Eric Thomas gives a black, gay, Christian narrative like no other. I relished in his prose and banter. He made me laugh out loud and think deeply which doesn’t happen to often under the same book cover.
If you are looking to read something outside your bubble, this could be it and I’m definitely “Here for It”.

What a delight it was to read this book at a time that feels pretty hopeless.
It made me laugh out loud numerous times and also had me picking my jaw off the floor with how seamlessly he could combine humor with harrowing truths about his life. Absolutely my favorite type of writing.
“I realize that this night in this church is the world that they will know, this is the world they will see as normal, this is the world they will inherit. A world made by people of all colors and sexualities and ages and faiths and gender expressions who have traveled many roads towards hope.”

I read this in a day and my only regret is that it wasn't longer so I could stay in R. Eric Thomas' world for more than 264 pages. I hope this is the first of many books to come! Excellent!

Because the LGBTQ community that stretches between Baltimore and Philly is smaller than you’d imagine, and I spent three years at the Univ. of Delaware for grad school, I am one-degree separated from this author by a handful of of mutual friends. And as luck would have it, all those friends shared the author’s original Facebook posts that catapulted him into the very deserved spotlight. All this to say, I’ve been a fan for a very long time and was thrilled to finally have the dedicated time to sit with these essays and enjoy them.
If you’re already a fan of Mr. Thomas’ work, this book will cement your love and feelings for his writing. I came expecting to laugh (there were also loud guffaws and more than one cackle), but what I didn’t expect was to also cry real tears, and experience a broad range of emotions outside of humor and entertainment. These essays took me there. (They may have also given me a new unrealistic fear of living in the darkness of the suburbs.)
Buy this book. Feel all the things. You won’t regret it.

I’m terrible at writing book reviews (I’m very envious of folks who are good at it), but I’m gonna try. I loved this book. It made me feel a lot - happy, sad, thoughtful, enlightened, encouraged and, honey, it made me laugh. Right out loud, many times. It’s a wonderful memoir and I hope everyone I know reads it.
