I love that this sequel revolved more around Voya's self discovery rather than romance. While Luc still plays a role in the story, Voya's struggle to find her footing as the new matriarch is the primary focus. She begins to question the stark divide between "pure" and "impure" magic, and how differently her community treats her following her family's designation as impure.

Once again, Voya has a great character arc and I loved seeing her evolve in her role as Matriarch. Voya also must confront the consequences of her choices in the previous book, and repair broken relationships with Luc and her family. Overall, this book felt even stronger than the first one and was a great ending to this duology.

The way the 2nd book in a duology should be done

Overall, this is not my favorite series unfortunately but I really appreciated what it was doing for representation. Voya was really annoying to me as a main character, she was very obnoxious at times and so self-involved and I was glad her family called her out but then they also forgave her too easily in my opinion lol. The plot was super nonsensical to me and I didn’t understand why it went in that direction, and the writing was super distracting for me too because I absolutely hated the fake swear words again (hack, sparked), like it would say “sparked as shit” so just use real swear words lol.

I absolutely loved this duology! I’m a sucker for a loving family dynamic and witches! Voya’s character was relatable and beautifully flawed. Wish I could erase this book from my brain and re-read it! Only thing I needed was a family tree in the book, sooo many characters and intertwined families I struggled to keep up at times.
