Moods: tense, relentless/non-stop, geo-political, steminist, anti-racist

Notes: told from Nicole’s perspective on the moon takes place at the same time as The Fated Sky - we see the fraught political landscape that we only saw glimpses and hints and consequences of during The Fated Sky. Earth Firsters are actively sabotaging the IAC and moon colony. Stick with Nicole as she ferrets out the saboteur(s) with Myrtle, Eugene, Hamid, and Helen. Relentless perfectly describes this books - one after another problems pop up - but at the same time it doesn’t feel overdone. An absolute rollercoaster emotions while set perfectly in the sexist and racist times of 1960s, expertly crafted AU. Excellent continuation of the Lady Astronaut novels!!

This was a really fun third installment of the lady astronaut series. Between the switch to Nicole as a POV and narrator and the nature of the plot, the book vibes much more like a mystery thriller than the first two, which was a fun and satisfying change of pace. (The second book, while excellent, just kind of made me sad and tired.) And because it takes place in the same timeline as the second book, it was also satisfying to learn more about what the moon and earth are up to during the time when Elma is going to Mars.

Interestingly, I had been assuming the series would end as a trilogy, and while I think that’s possible given the epilogue of The Relentless Moon, it feels like it leaves both the future of Earth First and the future of the world’s climate change preparations (and related civil rights movement) extremely unresolved. I’ll be curious to see if there are more books eventually and if so how many more are planned.
