I just could not deal with the juvenile writing anymore and it's not the writer's fault it's mine for reading a ya book knowing full well that I dislike them.

This follows the FMC and MMC Rayna and Kyto and their escapades trying to get into the gifted Fae academy.
Although Rayna shows no signs of magic she still has her heart set on attending GFA and when she does get in things change dramatically and the relationship between her and Kyto goes from bad to worse.

I am conflicted about rating this book, because there were so many good things about it but I struggled with the love triangle so much, that it took me a long time to finish.

To be fair, I just don't particularly like love triangles but that's just me personally and as this is YA perhaps readers haven't read as many as me and still find them enjoyable. It was just disappointing to me that it was such the main focus when there were so many more exciting and interesting things happening, to be so focused on their internal feelings and brooding about each other. It was just sort of tedious.

However aside from that I liked the book, it was fantastically written and I want to know what happens next. Also, the entire time all I could think was how great of anime this would make with the powers, imagery and the academy setting.

- I received this book as a promotional item in exchange for an honest review-

I let this sit on my tbr for a while after snapping it up for free, having seen it in one of my POC author/reader groups.

I went into it not knowing what to really expect, but I was here for POC Fae no matter what. This delivers a new and interesting world with ever-evolving characters and character relationships. Reina and Kaito are friends to enemies to frenemies/crushes in the first book of the series.

I really feel set up to loathe Kaito, the friend who kissed his friend, abandoned them after hurting them and then just continuing to harm them for the sake of it. It's a definite case of 'cool story, still abuse' when we learn Kaito's side of things. However, Chenelle carefully and skillfully give us reasons to like Kaito, to give him a second chance.

I won't lie, I was way more invested in Reina kicking Kaito's ass than I was Kaito getting a redemption arc. Reina's determination to not give up in the face of adversity is a very relatable mindset and story line for a F.MC. Her eagerness to have a place in her world, to be able to help make it a safer place for others, is admirable. I found myself cheering for her the whole time.

This book was just ok for me. I couldn’t really get into it. But I do love the authors writing in her other series, so this won’t deter me from reading more of her books.
