The tiffs between Agatha and James almost exceed the mystery-interest, but I still like 'ol Agatha.

Agatha Raisin and the Wellspring of Death is the seventh book in M.C. Beaton's cosy murder mystery series set in the Cotswolds. For the past six books, Beaton has proved herself an adept mystery writer, though you could argue that she is somewhat without flair. This seventh book is no exception. The mystery element is as sound as ever which I what I've come to expect from these books. What I really liked about this book was that Agatha's character is finally beginning to show some development that makes me warm to her a bit more. As always I enjoy these for what they are; quick, fun, and most importantly cosy mysteries.

Agatha Raisin is getting on my last nerve -- and I am not alone in this. For me, the irritation is due to the fact that she seems to feel it necessary to have a man constantly in attendance and that every move she makes is, to some extent a reaction to James Lacy (what she saw in that self-absorbed cold fish is beyond me). For the people of Ancombe, the irritation is due to Agatha's habit of poking her nose in other people's business when a murder has been done. They are really not nice people to begin with and they are very nasty to Agatha. The murderer is not a nice person either. But it was well written. And the series is worth keeping up with for the vicar's wife, Mrs. Bloxby, and for the hope that Bill Wong will someday figure out how to keep his parents from sabotaging his relationships.

Végre újra a régi környezet, megszokott szereplők és humor. Ez a történet most nem volt talán annyira izgalma, de mindenképpen hozta a szokásos élményt. A Jamessel való nyüglődésnek azért remélem lassan vége lesz :)

I will be taking a break from reading this novels for a while. I really don’t get why Agatha is it all still interested in James. James is worse than ever. The mystery was pretty fun, but the books are starting to get pretty repetitive.

The reader of this site may recall that I had a flurry of listening to Agatha Raisin audio books a while ago, when seemingly trapped in never-ending long driving days. They were fun, repetitive sure, a bit on the bitchy side ocassionally, and it turns out nothing like the TV series made of the same books. Which made for some amusement and confusion as THE WELLSPRING OF DEATH and THE WIZARD OF EVESHAM were aired on TV whilst I was listening to them in the car. Needless to say TV Agatha is nothing like book Agatha, and I kind of got to the stage where I preferred the TV version. Even with the wonderful Penelope Keith narrating the books.
