Didn’t finish - was fine until it got weird with the beast stuff - not my cup of tea. But would appeal to horror likers

Six years ago, I was brimming with a passion for books, for devouring all I could of the written word, that I started my account here on Goodreads. I didn't have much time to devote to it, and soon dropped off the site entirely until about a year and a half ago. Before that, this book had come up in my recommendations based on my previous reads. And now, 6 and a half years later, I have finally gotten around to reading what is by far one of my favorite books this year.

Taking a page out of the Dexter series (though in my opinion with much greater success), the novel focuses on a 15 year old boy who acknowledges one universal truth. He fears he's destined to be a serial killer, and is desperate to hold himself and his urges back. As the novel focuses on the dual psychologies of John (our protagonist), an actual serial killer comes into his small Midwest town, leaving a trail of mutilated bodies in their wake. Forced to deal with his sociopathy more than he ever has before, John fights not just for his town, but also for himself.

John is a gripping lead character, equal parts terrifying and cheer worthy. Mr. Wells does an incredible job of balancing the action, the mystery, and the mid-book twist with a delicate grace not normally seen in an author's first work. I am more than excited to continue on with this series, and see what other wonders Mr. Wells has in store for me. It took a long time to complete it, but I'm overjoyed I did!

I’m honestly not sure how to feel about this one. It kind of felt like a really weird fever dream. I liked the psychological aspect and there was something compellingly readable about it. However, the twist wasn’t for me and it was a bit too gory/graphically detailed for me personally at times 🤷‍♀️

This is dark and creepy and if you are thinking of reading this, you should be very comfortable with shows like Dexter and You, where you get in the head of a sociopath.

That said, it's compelling, interesting, and well-written.
