This would have been a near 5 star for me but the ending?! wtf???? zero closure!

otherwise an excellent read, I devoured this in 3 days. some of the red herrings are obvious in the writing but that I can forgive. The ending I cannot.

Margot, a crime reporter, returns to her small home town to care for her sick uncle and to look into the 20 year old case of her childhood friend's death.

This book flips between 2 timelines. The past when January is killed and the present when Margot come back to town. Everyone is a suspect and you never really know who to believe. Was it the brother? The mother? A random man?

This was an interesting take on a cold case story, but read very much like JonBenet Ramsey's case.

It had some good twists and turns, but that ending was such a bummer. So anti-climatic. It was a non-ending. I thought I was missing a chapter.

So many plot twists, every time I thought I had it figured out,  I was wrong lol
It's well written... this would have got 5 stars,  but leaving it open ended bothers me.  I really hope there's a sequel!

This is giving Pretty Little Liars in the sense that a lot of things are going on that came out of nowhere and the ending is just... not it

I really enjoyed the process of reading this book, it’s the first book in a while that’s made me think about it in between reads/want to get back to it. The author does red herrings and plot twists really well, and it’s an impressive debut book.

-0.5 stars because the flashback case was SO similar to
Spoiler JonBenet Ramsey’s story that it took a lot of the suspense out of it for me. I was left underwhelmed by the story playing out the same way as all the conspiracy theories about her case. That said, you can tell the author knows about realistic outcomes in this arena.

-1 Because, like everyone else, the ending took away from an otherwise powerful ending.
Spoiler To be in the corner of a character the whole time, and be excited that they “won”, just to not know if they died at the end/if their uncle with dementia is now alone is so weird to me. 4 more pages and I would have considered a 5 on this book.

I enjoyed the book and was surprised by the ending. Though I would have liked a more definitive ending, I liked being surprised by who the murderer was. I do wonder though
Spoilerif Officer Wallace was a red herring or why she was in the book but not mentioned with the serial child murderer. Was it because of the time gap?
Overall it was a twisty thriller that I enjoyed, with just that one plot hole.
