I love Crime Junkie and this book was on my radar even before I found the podcast. But making the connection bumped it to the top of my TBR.
It was an easy read. It was simple but had twists I wasn't expecting. I thought I knew who did it from the beginning, but was proven wrong multiple times.
Margot seems quite lost in life and there were some plot holes I didn't understand. Like what exactly happened with her parents? She didn't have friends?? I found Uncle Luke to be very loveable.
Also, not important, but I totally picture Detective Townsend looking like Gibbs from NCIS lol

All Good People Here by Ashley Flowers is a classic case of “meh” and I just couldn’t get into it. Crime mysteries are hit or miss for me, and this one missed, but if this is a sub-genre that works for you and you like the energy that crime podcasts bring, this could be a good choice.

In the book we meet Margot, who has moved back to her small hometown in Indiana to help care for her ailing uncle. She’s a crime journalist and trying to solve two cases from different time periods. One is from her childhood, a kidnapping and murder of her you neighbor, and two is from the current time when a similar disappearance is under active investigation. It’s a race against the clock and she’s chasing leads the police are ignoring.

So many things just didn’t work for me. The town’s “morals” were off-putting, the twist was easy to spot, the red herrings were basic, and it just wasn’t exciting to read.

Personally a bit too JonBenét Ramsey for me.
SpoilerSuch and unsatisfying ending I’m a crime junkie fan and understand real cases don’t magically get wrapped up with a bow at the end but this is a book! Let the good guy win lol.

WOW. I've never given a thriller a 5 star rating before, but I think this knocks everything else I've read out of the water. It will break your heart and make you grip the edge of your seat until your knuckles have turned white.
I felt like this book was written tactfully and brilliantly, despite its heavy subject matter. This book focuses on crimes against children, so I've included trigger warnings (that I know of) at the end of my review before reading as there are quite a few. The story jumps back and forth, mostly from Margot in 2019 to Krissy in 1994. If you're a Crime Junkie like me, you'll love the way it feels like you're unraveling the story along with Margot. Knowing what it's like first-hand, this is also a really realistic view into what it's like when someone in your family is fading from dementia. It was brutal to experience that with Margot. It's really easy to root for Margot being down on her luck and wanting to help out her uncle, and I think that's what makes this story so good. I'm very much a character girlie, but many crime thrillers are so focused on plot they end up having less compelling characters. This was not the case here, which is why I rated it so highly. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, the rug got pulled from under me for a gut-wrenching ending.
Trigger warnings: mentions of child SA, Murder of a child, self-harm, mentions of suicide
