I love Crime Junkie and this book was on my radar even before I found the podcast. But making the connection bumped it to the top of my TBR.
It was an easy read. It was simple but had twists I wasn't expecting. I thought I knew who did it from the beginning, but was proven wrong multiple times.
Margot seems quite lost in life and there were some plot holes I didn't understand. Like what exactly happened with her parents? She didn't have friends?? I found Uncle Luke to be very loveable.
Also, not important, but I totally picture Detective Townsend looking like Gibbs from NCIS lol

Honestly just a sad attempt at rewriting an actual tragedy. We all know this is a total rip off of the JonBenét Ramsey case and I at first gave it the benefit of the doubt but it disappointed me.
The main character Margot is okay to read about, but her story just came so easy to her you can tell that it got cut down to simple straightforward answers every time.
The many twists and red herrings never felt interesting enough to draw you in and the only character that felt like a real person was Krissy. Every other person felt like a charicture of an actual crime and that just feels icky to read.
I was so close to having my first DNF, but I persevered, but at what cost?

Crying score: No no no.

This was a great debut! I was really invested in the story and the past & present were well intertwined. The ending was just too abrupt for me and I'm disappointed that there's not going to be a sequel.

I’m a huge fan of Ashley Flowers and her podcasting. Crime Junkie was certainly my gateway into true crime podcasts.

I’ll admit, it was challenging finding a grip on this story. I felt a lack of immersion and the characters fell a bit flat for me. It definitely had some great potential, but was a little more predictable than I would have liked. Some of the plot’s twists came out of nowhere with a lack of build up to them. Also, the ending just…ended. Abruptly.

I did like the dynamics of the story, and the idea that nobody is who you think they were. Each character had a secret, which built a level of complexity to the mystery. There was a lot of telling and not showing with the writing, which I think was one of my biggest reasons of not being able to connect with the protagonist and the plot line.

Ashley said she wrote this as a love letter to the Crime Junkie fans, and it shows in a beautiful way.  The writing is interesting and fast paced, with an engaging story. It feels just like an episode of the podcast, in a great way. We follow two perspectives on the same case, watching things unfold and twist and end up in unexpected places, the jump between the two characters fluid and well done. ENDING SPOILERS
Spoiler I was SUPER disappointed with the ending though, leaving it on a depressing cliffhanger where we know Margot was murdered but never hear it is just... I don't know, it was frustrating. Would have LOVED a Crime Junkie style wrap up for an epilogue where we hear how her body was found, theories surrounding her death, etc. Especially since Ashley Flowers was the one reading the epilogue in the audiobook version. Huge missed opportunity that would've given a nice wrap-up feeling instead of me feeling like I accidentally skipped a chapter.
