I'm so so notorious for giving everything 5 stars and it may just be because I love Crime Junkie but this book is now in my top 5. I think it was very well written and the twists all shocked me (even if I did figure out a couple). And THAT ENDING. Our story follows a duel timeline with Margot in 2019, trying to solve not only the murder of her childhood friend but also the murder of another child; and on the other side we have Krissy in the 90's who discovers her child, January, dead in her own home. This book is so twisty and so great. If you like Crime Junkie (or not, I don't know your life), murder mysteries and shocking twists and turns out of your thrillers, give this book a try. This was Ashley Flowers very first novel and she absolutely killed it in the best way. (Pun intented).

I enjoyed the book and was surprised by the ending. Though I would have liked a more definitive ending, I liked being surprised by who the murderer was. I do wonder though
if Officer Wallace was a red herring or why she was in the book but not mentioned with the serial child murderer. Was it because of the time gap?
Overall it was a twisty thriller that I enjoyed, with just that one plot hole.

3.5 stars. I was honestly leaning towards a 5 star before the abrupt ending that seemed to miss a very important chunk prior to the epilogue. I would have understood the ending more if it was meant to be a series and that was just a cliffhanger. In relation to all of the twists, I did enjoy them as I had predicted many of them but I got excited when I realized I was correct, so I feel like that means even if predictable it was done in a way that the author guided the reader to coming to the realizations rather than them knowing all along (for a lot of it at least). Some of it I did suspect early on but I still had some doubt throughout the book. There were so many layers to what was going on and I was so frustrated that there was no complete resolution and the abrupt ending can be compared to a TV show that was suddenly canceled.

WOW. I've never given a thriller a 5 star rating before, but I think this knocks everything else I've read out of the water. It will break your heart and make you grip the edge of your seat until your knuckles have turned white.
I felt like this book was written tactfully and brilliantly, despite its heavy subject matter. This book focuses on crimes against children, so I've included trigger warnings (that I know of) at the end of my review before reading as there are quite a few. The story jumps back and forth, mostly from Margot in 2019 to Krissy in 1994. If you're a Crime Junkie like me, you'll love the way it feels like you're unraveling the story along with Margot. Knowing what it's like first-hand, this is also a really realistic view into what it's like when someone in your family is fading from dementia. It was brutal to experience that with Margot. It's really easy to root for Margot being down on her luck and wanting to help out her uncle, and I think that's what makes this story so good. I'm very much a character girlie, but many crime thrillers are so focused on plot they end up having less compelling characters. This was not the case here, which is why I rated it so highly. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, the rug got pulled from under me for a gut-wrenching ending.
Trigger warnings: mentions of child SA, Murder of a child, self-harm, mentions of suicide
