I was surprised by how much I disliked this book, after enjoying so many of Lisa Kleypas' previous books, and being excited about Win and Kev based on Mine 'Til Midnight.

What should have been a sweet childhood sweethearts to lovers became a frustrating push-and-pull that was poorly executed, with no remorse and no grovel from Kev who treated Win so poorly. Everything from
assuming her a prostitute on first meeting, to not owning up to his actions and nearly ruining her
were so unlike the man from the previous book that I couldn't look past it. In addition, needing to ruin the other love interest just to make Kev more appealing was utterly ridiculous. There were so many stupid twists and turns that weren't needed, and destroyed what should have been a angsty love story. I know body-betrayal is a core trope in so many of LK's books, which I can normally look past, but Kev was so irredeemable that it left me seething.

And all of this is not even getting into the stereotypes applied to the Roma men, which were so much worse in this compared to the previous book.

The only positives in this book were the glimpses into Amelia and Cam's relationship, and Bea's meddlesome pets.

This book has some messed up stereotypes of Romani people embedded. The biological essentialism that the half Romani characters are travelers who also 'need to put down roots' because they're half- Irish is strange. The sections where Merripen is brutish and uncontrollable as part of his 'nature' is really frustrating too! Lisa Kleypas does better in the Wallfowers and Ravenels series' than in the Hathaways in my opinion.

Horrendous. The characters were flat and annoying, the plot felt forced throughout the entire novel.
Also, whenever Meripen talked about having intercourse or making Winnifred pregnant he sounded eerily similar to Prince Charles saying he wanted to be a tampon for Camilla. It’s weird- it’s so weird, especially when he talks about his semen as being a parassite inside of her. Excuse me? What did I just read?

4,75 stars. Not 5 stars because Kev annoyed me by how he showed (but more so hid) his feelings for Win. I’m glad he learned and grew to accept that he COULD be with Win.

OH. MY. LANTA. SO HOT!! Kev and Win’s chemistry was AMAZING their love is so beautiful because when it wasn’t shown as passion they were both so caring for each other. Kev cleaning the windows all the time and Win being the only one who knew how to make him open up about his past and things he was worried about.

I also really enjoyed the plot of this book. Technically there were two I guess. They were so interesting and
the grandpa coming to see them was so unexpected to me!
