How did it take so long for me to hear about this book?

I saw the preview of the film version of the book, and my friend leaned over in the theater to say, “Buy and read this one right now, if you haven’t already.” I ordered it on Kindle on my phone before the preview was over.

I didn’t just read it, I drank it. Mia’s voice was so clear, so steady, despite the horrific thing that happens, and the decision she has to make. Her present and past feel rich and real, the weight and sway of her time figuring out what to do felt natural and true. By the time I ended the novel, I felt like I knew Mia, as if she was a real girl from my own life, and I can’t stop thinking about her.

So beautifully done, I purchased Gayle Forman’s other YA novel within minutes of finishing this one. What a storyteller.

I really enjoyed the book, I’m only giving it 4 stars because I felt it ended abruptly.

If I Stay is about a teenage girl, who gets in a car accident with her family and subsequently spends the next several hours in the hospital. The reader soon after learns that her parents died on the scene. Mia, the narrator, tells her story in first person, going back and forth between an out-of-body experience at the hospital and memories over the past several years of her family, her friends, and of course her first love and boyfriend, Adam.

This book is super short, so I was able to read it in just a few hours. While that may seem like I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was just okay. I knew it was going to be a quick read from the start, so I just plowed through it. Having recently read If I Fall, by Lauren Oliver, there were some pretty big similarities. Perhaps it was just because I read it first, but I preferred Oliver’s version over this one. That being said, If I Stay and If I Fall both have great story lines, albeit somewhat the same.

Without giving too much away, the book is a series, and ends in a way that keeps you wanting to read more. At only 118 pages (the way the Nook reads), this easily could have, and probably should have been a longer book. I’m a sucker for a series, and even more of a sucker for a short teenage romance, so I’ll definitely be readying Where She Went to see how the story turns out.

A student of mine was very keen to get me to read this and I usually oblige as I like to have a sense of what teenagers are reading now. This is a fairly decent yarn, as far as YA books go. In terms of writing style, I would prefer to read John Green any time. Nonetheless, I will still catch the movie when it comes out and have a good crying session. The books is great for for a light, no-frills rainy day reading.
