Corelli's Mandolin, by Louis de Bernières

De Bernières only really liked writing about Corelli and the book fell apart when he wasn’t in the scene; the first 100 pages were vacuous and the last 80 pages felt rushed.

Besides that, the middle was a thoroughly enjoyable read with rich characterisation- the whimsy and youth of Pelagia and Corelli, punctuated by the wisdom and care of Iannis, along side the power and warmth of Drosoula and Carlo.

Adored and nostalgic, but don’t understand why it’s my dad’s favourite book (sorry dad)

Yeah I agree with the comments below, apart from the ending, this was a blinder of a book. Odyssian in scope, I found it real epic, but what really stood out for me was the way de Bernieres mixes humour and real sadness. I loved Corelli as a character, you know he's gonna be lovable as soon as he's introduced in the book. I'll definitely be reading more of de Bernieres' other books now. Great.

3.5 stars.

Set before and during World War II, on the Greek island of Cephallonia, this story follows Pelagia, a girl who grew up on the island and who has to deal with the occupying forces of Italy arriving on her doorstep and moving into her town and her house.

Pelagia was engaged to a boy from the island who went off to fight the war, but then Captain Corelli from Italy arrives, with his jovial nature and his talent for playing the mandolin, and the previous fiance is all but forgotten.

Pelagia and Corelli must deal with the fact that he is part of the enemy, and they must deal with the fact that he might not survive the war. Their love does not seem possible.

This book was written in the most beautiful way, and the words really enchanted me. But it does lose points for how bad the last quarter of the book was. It was rushed and weird and I can't say that I enjoyed the ending at all.

Rather disappointed. The quality of the writing varies quite a lot, the attempts at humour are a bit too easy/obvious to my taste. The beginning was good, the middle rather painful, and I kept hoping the ending would make up for it. Despite the high potential in this book, it did not, and I have been grumbling about trudging my way through this book since then.
