I’ve always loved Patterson’s books, they’re well written, easy to read and full of action.
I have to admit that I watched season 1 of Instinct before I knew it was based on a Patterson book and I fell deeply in love with the show. Then I finally got around to reading “Murder Games” as it was called then and loved the book as well. It’s rare that I love both the book and the show cause I always find the book better. I have no idea how much input Patterson or his co author has on the tv show but it’s almost better than the book. And thanks to the tv show I can picture Alan Cumming as Dylan, Bojana Novakovic as Elizabeth/Lizzie, Daniel Ings as Tracy/Andy and it makes it so much better! I can feel their friendship and their love. I was heart broken when Instinct was cancelled after just 2 seasons.

Now onto this book; there are some difference between the show and books, the main ones being Andy is called Tracy in the books, Tracy is an aspiring actor who settled into law instead of a former lawyer turned bar owner like in the tv show and he doesn’t know about Dylan’s CIA past.
I loved Dylan’s opening moments, his first lines, the way he threw his class into panic over a final. I can picture it so clearly in my head. The Reinhardt sarcasm and lines are my favorites. I can see this book playing out in my head as an episode from Instinct, thanks to both the tv show and how well these books are written. I usually have a hard time picturing scenes in my head while I read and the fact that I can see it so clearly now is a credit to the authors and the tv makers.
I’ve always loved Lizzie/Elizabeth and Dylan’s friendship whether on the tv show or in the books. It’s something refreshing and comforting over it. I’m looking forward to more Instinct books in the future.

Wasted potential.
It's not a bad book at all, but it could've been so much more. The characters, especially Elizabeth, and the premise were interesting, but the execution really brought the rating down by a few points.
This may be me, but when reading a thriller, I want to be able to solve the case either along side them or before them, based on clues given in the text, and this was hard to do when the information was given to us afterwards the MC, Dylan, understood what was going on or it was omitted when the character found it out, just to be revealed later. Also, the fact that the serial killer was a person introduced towards the end was a bit anticlimactic and made it obvious that it was him.
The writing is not bad, but sometimes it's redundant or explains what the characters are saying or their dynamics in a conversation, when it's already clear. Seems like the author underestimates our ability to understand the book lol.

Because of the TV show...

I initially picked this up because I liked the show, little did I know I would love the book, another Patterson book added to my collection :-)

A good thriller, with enough believability to keep the pages turning.

Eh.
It doesn’t say on the cover that it’s the 2nd book in a series.. but the cover does say Dr. Dylan REI hart and Detective Elizabeth Needham- are they the new Sherlock Holmes and Watson? Well they can’t be because Detective Needham isn’t in nearly half the book.
There is also a cliche terrorist attack.
