A little underwhelmed by this one. The story was a bit different than what I expected.

What a creepy and unique dystopian. I read this a few years ago and it has definitely stuck with me.

The wealthy control water after global warming destroys the environment. Displaced children flood the cities looking for a safe place to live. The Home seems like a perfect place, but something is quite wrong.

Audiobook- awkward narrator
The story is too real and too heartbreaking; redeemed by a hopeful ending.

This is another dystopia story. Devin lives in a hot, dry world. In fact, he's in a tiny, hidden oasis of self-sufficiency and peace with his grandfather -- until the inevitable happens. Devin buries his grandfather and decides he needs to go to the city to find people to come back to the farm with him. But the city is awful, filled with cruelty and indifference. And orphans.

Devin meets Kit, who teaches him the ways of the street. Kit takes him to the school, where he meets another boy who speaks of a place for children, with lots of food, clothing, toys, and adoptive parents. Most children believe this is a myth; Kit certainly does. But when Devin shares something valuable with the lost boy, from kindness, another boy named Roman offers to take him to this place. Devin insists on bringing Kit, and off they go.

But if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I saw the shocker coming pages before it was revealed, though it was cleverly done. Devin becomes part of an interesting ensemble, who share one common thread (no spoilers here), except for Kit.

The environmental bits aren't hit very hard, but the implication is there for clever children to notice and consider. It really isn't a big theme, more of a "in a world too hot, here is a story."

The conclusion from this book: the strength and vitality of youth might only be best appreciated after it is gone.

Creepy. The main character has synesthesia, which was interesting to read about.
