This was an okay book! Really more like 3 1/2 stars, but you know. The writing was much more solid this time around and the pacing better. I probably would have rated it higher except there was a good deal of content related to sexual abuse/rape (in the past) and an (unrelated) child molester and it mostly just made me uncomfortable. Also there's some definite... active consent issues with Phryne and one of her 'love interests' that I didn't like. (It didn't help that this love interest also bordered on adultery, so.)

Everything wrapped up in a neat bow. That's all this story is. The main characters are fun in that swept along in the wake of way.

The story was fairly weak. There are some disturbing themes but with the tone of the book they are just blithely pushed aside and you just know nothing actually horrible will happen.

It was one of those stories where the characters do this and do that and then solve this and go off and do that and everything just works without any difficulty and done. Brush your hands off and away you go. Nothing more to see here.

I enjoyed book two more than book one. It felt smoother and less awkward and the storyline kept me engaged. I will continue on with the next book in the series.

Phryne Fisher is back in her second novel, and while she's considerably less insufferable in this book, she's still so anachronistic it's hard to suspend your disbelief.

But if you can manage it, you're in for an enjoyable enough time as Miss Fisher settles into her new home (address 221B), flies a plane (of course), defends an accused murderer (with the help of a lawyer friend), rescues an abducted child (all in a day's work), and still finds time to have amazing sex (heck, why not?)
