Yikes, I can see why this book wasn’t used in the tv series. Messy and confusing plot, horrendous characters, and some really weird ethical takes. For example, a kidnapper is really ‘just a good guy who made some poor decisions’ and my personal favourite, ‘give a child molester a woman who looks like a child rather than a real child… yuk yuk yuk. 0.5 only because I still love Phryne and Dot. Other than that this book was a disaster.

I actually liked this one a bit better than the first. The little girl Candida is ADORABLE. Phryne goes into questionable territory (you can read it for yourself), but it all works out, I guess? It makes me question how much a female character can play into the James Bond stereotype, and how much I really want her too. But not going to lie I did have a crush on Dr. Fielding. Maybe I should hold Phryne to a higher standard-- TV Phryne I absolutely do and I love that about her how she can be promiscuous and mischievous but still ultimately look out for the greater good in a way that feels authentic-- but I find I don't miss any of the fun of her character even when allowing for her to be a bit shallow and morally gray at times.
