This book was a very strong four stars. I throughly enjoyed it from start to finish. I loved how the development of their relationship intertwined with them coming to terms with their respective feelings of grief and the fact that they were generally pretty good communicators with each other. It was beautifully done. My only complaint is really a personal preference. I like witty dialogue and I found the dialogue in this book to be very straightforward.

What can I say, I’m trash for a man in motley who charges into slums to save orphaned girls and offers to kill on his lady’s behalf.

I think I expected to like this less than I did, so therefore my bar was exceeded. I don't think I always liked Meg (not always drawn to the sunshine bubbly springtime goddess heroines), I was interested in Godric's story based on what we had seen of him, and I do think this book focuses more on his angst/development than Meg's. I never really thought to pair them together. But it did seem to work. I'm drawn to widows/widowers in stories, and I liked that both characters were grieving someone, that depth added necessary character development, as well as the interactions with the family and pets which added humor. Much of the plot centers on the Ghost of St. Giles plot continuing, which didn't really bother me. Also loved the singular minor interaction between Sarah and D'Arque. I do enjoy when a woman really is unfazed by a rake's usual charms. Artemis's set up is interesting too.

So yeah, I really enjoyed this one! The narrator is different for this one, and I prefer the Ashford McNab versions.

I'm assuming Penelope is going to get a redemption story because she was extremely annoying in this one lol.

Lord of Darkness
4 Stars

Lady Margaret Reading travels to London with plans to consummate her marriage of convenience to Godric St. John. After losing the love of his life, Godric has dedicated his life to serving the people of St. Giles and has no interest in his young wife until she arrives on his doorstep with seduction in mind.

Readers expecting an historically accurate and intensely thrilling read are bound to be disappointed. However, if you are interested in an entertaining and steamy romance with well-developed characters and an engaging story then this is the book for you.

Lets get the problems out of the way first. As with many of Hoyt’s books, it is necessary to suspend one’s disbelief when it comes to historical accuracy in terms of the female characters’ role in society. Not only does Megs engage in a sexual relationship outside of wedlock and become pregnant as a result, but she is also quite open about her behavior and even seeks to avenge the death of her lover - these things were simply not done in the 18th century.

The Lassie Snatcher’s plot line is back and even though it has potential with some exciting action scenes, it is not particularly well developed or riveting. The same is true of the murder investigation, which is uninspired and predictable.

In contrast, the romance between Megs and Godric is one of the best in the series. Both Megs and Godric are haunted by their past loves and struggle with the need to move on with their lives. The attraction between the two is tangible and their love for each other builds slowly but surely throughout the book.

There are also intriguing glimpses into the lives of the hero and heroine in the next book, Artemis Greaves and Maximus Batton, and it will be interesting to see how two such dissimilar people find common ground.

I was extremely surprised by how much I loved this book. I have been putting this off for days because it just didn't sound good to me.

I am a jealous creature. So when I see a book that the characters were madly in love with a wife or lover that died, I am instantly turned off by it. I don't want to read about someone trying to "compete" with an ex lover. This book started off that way... except they weren't competing in this one because they both had an ex love that they didn't want to get over, ever. But Megs wants a baby so she has to try and seduce her husband into bedding her. Besides that there is the fact that Godric is another Ghost and he's out saving children and trying to find Megs' ex lover's murderer.. Yeah.. Godric was actually kind of amazing. I think I fell in love with him a little bit.

This is one of those times where you can't always rate a book by its synopsis. At least in my case because it has something that I am not totally crazy for but it still ended up being an amazing book and I'm mad at myself for not reading it sooner.

This book is almost exactly like every other book in the series. I keep reading hoping I will love the next one, but I do not. The premise is good, the characters have potential to be interesting and ultimately the stories fall flat. I considered DNFing throughout the whole book.
