Couldn't force myself to get interested in this book. The beginning is extremely slow.

This atmospheric story is set in a bank in two time-frames: firstly, when operational, in 1978 and secondly, twenty years later, when the bank is a spooky abandoned building. There is a young woman in each time-frame, both more curious than it’s in her interest to be. And there are keys: single keys and bunches of keys, keys with letters and keys with numbers and keys with nothing at all.
At times this reminded me of (one of my top favourite books) ‘Tom’s Midnight Garden’ in the way that something would be put down in one era and found in another.
It’s all very mysterious. And, to be honest, I hadn’t a clue what was going on half the time- I’m not even sure I understood what was going on at the end! But I loved it anyway.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I started it Tuesday afternoon and finished it Thursday by lunch which is quite a feat for a nearly 500 page book. Set in Cleveland (my hometown), it weaves together the stories of two women caught up in a bank scandal 20 years apart.
The novel does a good job keeping you engaged throughout and doesn't give away the story too soon (so you wonder what they heck is going to be covered in the remaining pages) or too late (so it feels like the author got tired and just threw the end together). The end was satisfying and I found myself wanting a sequel so I could know for certain what happens to the heroines.
A fun and enjoyable mystery and a fast read. It's not a Pulitzer or Man Book Prize winner, but it deserves the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award it won in 2014

Better than I expected!
This story was interesting, and I enjoyed the mystery. I liked how the story lines were taking place twenty years apart but seemed to mirror one another.

Good grief. I started off enjoying this book, but holy Moley does it drag on. And on. When I checked my progress on Audible only to see that I still had almost half the book left, I just couldn't keep going. Honestly, by that point I no longer cared about the mystery or the characters.

Way too slow; not much excitement at all. I kept waiting for something to happen and just felt disappointed when things did happen until the bit of excitement at the very end. Nice concept, but 477 pages got monotonous!

I really enjoyed this story. I read it in conjuction with the audio version. It did take me a couple of chapters to get used to the narrative flow as it alternated between the past and current day.
I especially liked how as the story progressed you started to see the intersection between the past and present characters and there were a couple twists I did not see coming

I love this book!
om beginning to end and I just couldn't put it down. My house was neglected for a good 4 or 5 hours as I went to the First Bank of Cleveland with both Beatrice and Iris. Definitely recommend if you love suspense novels!

I enjoyed this book but sometimes had a hard time following timelines because the two main characters were rather similar. The book seemed to wrap up a bunch of mysteries at the end really quickly as well as left some open which I’m not personally a fan of. Over all it kept my attention though and it was fun to read about familiar places in Cleveland, Ohio!
