Definitely an easier read than Evelina but also less enjoyable

The original 'gossip magazine' in American literature, The Coquette tells the fictionalized version of the fall of Elizabeth Whitman in early US. Although it was a bit flowery at times, and the high dramatism often left me rolling my eyes, this text is a wonderful peek behind the early-American domesticity (think of it as an early soap opera). Bonus marks for the intriguing depictions of Eliza's two suitors, Rev. Boyer and Major Sanford.

OH MY GOSH!!! I read this book for my American Women Writers class and it is fantastic. I feel so deprived that I had never heard of this book until now. This could easily make a blockbuster movie. Anywho, this book was great and I loved it and Sanford is trash.

Entertaining enough. Way too long though, and they're scared of just goddamn saying what they mean.

I read this for class, and I actually really loved it. There is something unique to the "Seduction Novel" genre in that this book does not make you hate the "Rake." Since it is based on a real story, I think it was hard to conceal the complexities of love into the stereotypical storyline of a ruined woman. It's my belief that Eliza Wharton was happy to finally be free in the end.
