I couldn't stand any of the characters in this book. They were all horrible people (aside from maybe Lily's parents). It made it hard to really get into the book because they were all so awful. Nevertheless, I finished it. I did enjoy the plot (mostly). The book went on way too long. I kept waiting for it to end, but then there were more and more twists. I didn't understand why we heard so much about Carla's school life and her pencil case. That talked to her? It was weird.
Spoiler
I hated the end. As awful as Carla was, that she should be put in jail for life because of Lily being a selfish, horrible person was wrong. I felt bad for her and was hoping she'd be redeemed.happycrafter207's review against another edition

My brain hurts from sitting on the fence and trying to decide if i really liked this book or didnt like this book. I’ve been here a while. On one hand, this book was enticing and the plot was very well thought out. The characters went on long personal journeys and I have decided I didnt like any of the characters in this story at all which made it so the book was more enjoying actually.
The book is cut into two halves, beginning with Lily as a newly qualified solicitor, fresh from her honeymoon with her new husband Ed. Her first case is to defend a convicted murder Joe Thomas, who was accused of killing his girlfriend. There is a strange attraction between Lily and Joe and the marriage is all roses. The story is told in the point of view of Carla, a young girl living in the same apartment building as Lily and Ed and Lily.
The next half of the book is fast forwarded to fifteen years later. Lily is now a successful partner at a law firm, she and Ed have managed to make it work and now have a son together. Carla returned to the UK after going home with her Mamma to Italy and has returned into Lily and Ed’s lives un-expectantly. Her motives are mainly money, as Ed gained quite a lot from a painting he had drawn of her as a young child which was successful.
It was an interesting read. As I said before, though, I found myself struggling to find anything about the characters I liked. There are lots of twist and details giving doing the last 25% of the book and there is a ending that was wrapped up. It was entertaining all the same.

Late to the game but wanted to chip in agreement with the offness of this book! The epilogue summed up all that was wrong with it for me. Lily would think something kind about someone/herself. And then go off on a tangent about good vs evil, justice shades of gray etc. Over and over and over. The author couldn’t even let Ross remain decent and had to create an unbelievable past for him. I wanted to believe the storylines for each character but thought it jumped the shark at dozens of points throughout.

This book captured me from the first page. I couldn’t wait to be in the car so I could listen to it more. Towards the conclusion I had to listen at home. I think this is the fastest I’ve ever listened to a book before. The author created the characters well and the plot was excellent and captivating. She kept a certain amount of mystery to make it interesting and untangled enough to satisfy my curiosity which made me thirst for the end. I highly recommend this book.

This story threw me for a loop that I did NOT see coming. Definitely a thriller. It takes a while to get started as you are introduced to the characters, but after I got a third of the way through, I could NOT put it down. The changing POVs isn’t too hard to follow, and you get used to it. I didn’t realize this was a debut, and it’s a GREAT one. Definitely a worthwhile read if you’re looking for mystery, betrayal, and unexpected twists.

This has been my first ever psychological thriller so it's hard to be fair. I definitely enjoyed it and although it's a thick book, you go through it so fast!
There are plenty of plot twists and I literally struggled to anticipate anything. It's smartly written, for sure!
