"I’ve heard if you die in a dream,
you die in real life—it’s not true. I’ve tested
the lucid edges of nothing, and still wake up.
Still here."

This Way to the Sugar is absolutely gut-wrenching; reading this collection is like rubbing a wound raw to the bone, being written with startlingly graphic imagery regarding the body and the ways in which it is consumed through abuse and fetishization. Nguyen also covers topics like identity, trauma, body image, and his complicated relationship with his mother, with biting, brutal honesty that takes on a confessional quality. Take your time with Nguyen's words, and it will leave a lasting impression.
Graphic: Bullying, Child abuse, Sexual content, Body shaming, Sexual assault, and Adult/minor relationship
Moderate: Homophobia and Child death

Everything I wish I could express in poetry but can't and other things I have never experienced but deeply impact me because of Nguyen's writing
