This book is so good and the perfect introduction to the Alaskan Security series! It is also the continuation of Wade/Whitt and Bess's story that began in Collateral Damage (you don't need to read it to understand this book but it does give you insight into the night that they first met.)

It has been two years after the events of Collateral Damage and Wade still can't stop thinking about the woman he spent the night with. The things he once enjoyed doing, such as his job, have dulled in comparison to what he knows he could have had if he stayed. When his current assignment puts him face to face with her and the ensuing dangers that protecting her brings to the team, he risks it all for the chance of a family that he never thought he would want.

I loved Wade and Bess! I had hoped that there was more to them after Collateral Damage and was so glad that Jemma continued their story in Loss Recovery! I also really loved the introduction we get to the other members of the team. I especially loved Brock, Wade's closest friend and partner on the team. Brock has Wade's back on missions but he loves to mess with him too, especially when Bess is around! Harlow is another character that I absolutely adored in this book! Harlow is recruited to help Rogue's tech guy, Dutch, when the mission becomes more than one person can handle and she is sassy! It was hysterical watching Dutch and Harlow go at it!

This book begins an arc that ends in Book 5, Strategic Maneuvers. It is highly recommended that you start with this book and read Books 2-5 next to best enjoy the story, mystery and resolution.

Overall, it was boring and nothing made it stand out from other secret babies/second chance/alpha hero/bodyguard tropes.

The most important parts of this story happened before the book. First, the supposedly incredible one night the two MCs shared (a night they still think about and fantasize about two years later) isn't in the book. Apparently there’s a prequel according to other reviews, which had this backstory, but A) this is listed as book #1 in the series, so how was I supposed to know there was a prequel? And B) the author should have included it as a prologue, started the book there and then jumped to two years later. I was confused at first, wondering if I missed something, which technically I did. I didn’t feel the chemistry between the characters and couldn’t connect with their relationship.

Additionally, everything that happened since their amazing night isn’t in the book. The character growth, the meet cute, his decision to leave, the longing for each other, the suffering through pregnancy alone, the being traumatized by her ex. All the backstory is summed up in minimally detailed comments throughout the book. This whole book pretty much took place inside a cabin in Alaska. Felt like we started the book in act 3 of the story with no context of what’s happened to this point and only getting little nuggets of information to piecemeal together an idea of what’s going on.

There is a serious lack of description in this book. We have no idea what this cabin looks like, no detail on the team Wade works on, how long he’s worked with them. Honesty, I only have a vague idea of what all the characters look like with what little description was given.

Then the whole plot was weak and horribly forced into the story. Her ex was a senator’s son and wanna be drug dealer that needed money, so he was trying to kidnap her son for ransom to get said money from her rich father. But wait, what about the other trained team Wade and the other mercenaries were worried about? The whole “there are no coincidences,” that there were two different people after her. Or the thought it had nothing to do with Bessie and they were targeting Wade or the team itself. How were they involved or explained away?? It was probably explained, but it was so bad and thin, I’ve already forgotten it and I just finished the book less than 8 hours ago. Overall, a lame ‘resolution’ for a story that went nowhere.

Obviously set up for more books with the other characters, and besides possibly the Dutch/Harlow dynamic, I couldn’t care less. Will not be reading further into this series.

Apparently there was a prequel which explains a lot. The book was really boring honestly but I can appreciate the idea behind it. Also, the team calling Bess “our girl” was odd bc it felt like there was no actual bonding moments between her and the actually team? Idk it was weird but my OCD didn’t let me DNF the book.

Liked the story but…

The storyline was good. Not my usual stuff but held my attention for the whole book. I really liked the two man characters and don’t for get about Marlo.

However the characters development on the side characters was lacking. I understand not going into their full background but I would confuse some of them.

I can usually keep like 10 characters straight and this book did not really have that many.

I did like it enough to keep going in the series.
