I was very excited to pick this up and the art was nice too but not as good as Stjepan Sejic's in the last volume. Mera is out of commission, which was sad because she is usually the bad-ass, can take care of herself type of person. But in this volume, she loses her ability to breathe underwater and is trapped in a bubble with limited air.

Oh my, the scene where Arthur breaks her out and gives her mouth to mouth was steamy!

I do like the tender scene later when they are just talking about how it is her destiny to be Queen of Atlantis. I never thought about that while reading the last 4 volumes.

It is quite clear to see that Dolphin was in love in Arthur and why not? He saved her and they were on the run together.

The other half of the volume is a totally different story. Like a side story? of Arthur and Mera being trapped by the Black Mercy, a sentient plant and thinking they had a son called Tom. It was a wonderful future to see but unfortunately not real. Well here is hoping that they do eventually grow old together and have children! The art was so-so.

I am not sure what to think about Murk. He was loyal to Arthur then turns on him once Rath is chosen as king but then reveals, he knew all along that Arthur was not dead. Did he save him or is there some other motive?

Where is volume 6?

Thoroughly enjoying the storytelling in this series. It’s been so interesting to see Arthur & Mera’s individual journeys change course, as well as witness the stresses those challenges put on their romantic relationship. The artwork in this volume is delicious & atmospheric. And the Crownspire tale at the end was wonderfully done, very emotional.

Really, REALLY good. The standalone at the end was especially well done.

Alright so this volume continues the resistance story from last volume. And he art is really good. Other than that I like the little story they have after the three issues they give you. It’s just for the man who has everything but with Aquaman.

The story is alright but it goes against some of Abnetts earlier run. Cause now the sisterhood wants Mera to be queen and Aquaman is going to fight for Atlantis for her and for the good of Atlantis.

It’s alright I’ll tell ya. It’s not great but it’s entertaining enough and I enjoy how Abnett seems to really dig Batman and I enjoy that. But the elements of the story that renounce Arthur as King then all the sudden these same people that opposed Arthur now want Mera? Didn’t work for me.

There’s some good here, but it was alright.

2 stars.

The Aquaman series seems to always land on the same 2 stories: the Aquaman/Mera relationship or Aquaman's battle for the crown. Here we get both. What elevates this version though is the art. I love the realistic pencil drawings. They looked great.

85/100.

I still enjoy this series, but I'm getting a little tired of the fight for the crown.

The annual at the end was a bit strange, but I'm excluding that in my rating.

Volume five takes a step back from Stjepan Sejic's weird murky take on the underbelly of Atlantis but this storyline still resolves itself in a satisfying if significantly less trippy way.
