This graphic novel was WOW. A new favorite middle grades graphic novel for me. I think I was sold when, from one of the first few pages, it became clear that imaginative play allows for such freedom of self expression, among a myriad of other things.
Each new character introduced - and their alter-cardboard-ego - is beautifully and subtly diverse. This book tackles so much - including some heavy matter - but does it in very kid-appropriate ways. Because it includes so many different character challenges, none gets much attention, but I’m hoping that’s just part of the world-building, and the characters and their various plights will get more attention in the following books.
Lastly, I found it really interesting how Chad Sell collaborated with other writers on the creation of the different kid characters, and their inclusions mesh together so well. I’m appreciative for the “How We Built the Kingdom” feature in the end pages that profiles each writer. RIP Kris Moore.

This was such a cute collection of stories! The characters are diverse and deal with real problems, so young readers will definitely find inspiration and ways to cope in these pages. I also loved the stories that didn’t have any words, just images that were able to convey so much meaning.
