Extra half star because I learned a lot about things we didn't get taught in school. But this book is insanely disjointed, and you can tell this is just a "plan" for a book like a couple chapters are titled. Plus, maybe this guy was pretty accepting of other cultures for the 1950s-1978 but he comes off as a real jerk. And very pretentious. Unsure how much of this is from the translation.

219 mi hodně připomněla současnou situaci v Palestině a Izraeli, uf.

Very inspiring and fascinating time capsule of African and Latin American cultures, written in a distinctly human-focused way.

A brilliant work. Strangely unclassifiable. Part reportage, part personal notebook, part self-mythologization, part political analysis, part poetry. At the most generic level of description, a work of nonfiction from various war-torn and troubled places in Africa and Latin America, but somehow both more and less than that. At times finely particular, and at other times broad to the level of general cycles of history. Always startling, with the frisson of the real.
