...in which chad is located, and he helps rukia fight off a hollow. the parakeet soul is freed. rukia goes to get her gigai tuned up and comes home with soul candy for ichigo. when he eats it, a spare soul occupies his regular body so no one will notice him lying around looking dead when he goes off to fight hollows. but the first time he uses it, a defective soul called a mod konpaku inhabits his body and behaves unusually.

Spoiler I loved this volume of Bleach! Tite Kubo does a really great job building on Ichigo and Rukia, but also really makes Chad and Kon special. I found Chad's fearlessness even more poignant than the anime, but surprisingly I was most taken by Kon. When Kon would not let a hollow fall on ants as he cannot take a life, I was touched. I love the action and development of characters I grew up loving.
