C'était intéressant mais j'étais soulagée qu'il y ai peu de pages car autrement j'aurais vite voulu passer à autre chose.
Ce livre évoque la différence de culture entre les Japonais et les Occidentaux, au sujet du travail principalement. Donc, comme je le disais, c'était intéressant mais selon moi, loin d'être renversant. Le style d'écriture est bon, fluide, on s'ennuie pas alors qu'en soit l'histoire est loin d'être palpitante.

Quelle belle surprise! Je n'avais jamais lu de romans d'Amélie Nothomb. La seule chose que je connaissais de l'autrice c'est qu'elle est Belge et a grandi au Japon et ailleurs et qu'elle a un côté plutôt loufoque (pour ne pas dire fou) en entrevue! J'ai débuté ma lecture avec très peu d'attentes. Je m'attendais à quelque chose de recherché, un peu snobinard ou prétentieux mais je dois dire que j'ai été charmée par la simplicité du personnage et de l'histoire. J'ai beaucoup apprécié sa manière de raconter, j'aurais pu me croire à ses côtés en train d'essayer de faire ma place dans ce nouveau travail japonais. Le langage est effectivement très recherché comme je m'y attendais mais rien d'incompréhensible ni prétentieux.

I first read this book in French for grad school. I rated it a 2 because I simply didn't "get it." Not the language. The point. Out of curiosity, I decided to pick it up again, in English this time, and it did manage to earn itself another star now that I'm older and reading for pleasure. Here's what it does well:
- imaginative language
- I love the variety of mythological references. I learned a few things, such as the concept of Danaides jar/jug as a metaphor for futility
- oversimplified but comedic and witty dichotomous look at Western vs Eastern culture
Here's what I suffered through:
- I'm not sure if the main character is supposed to be likable, but she's certainly arrogant and flippant.
- Rife with early 90's fatphobic language. As a "not-so-thin" person myself, I felt extremely bothered by the language
Overall, I was entertained, but I still... don't get the point.
