This was a super sweet, funny When Harry Met Sally retelling. I liked all of the characters, even at their lowest points. I felt like the development of Ari and Josh was particularly interesting, especially as we get both of their perspectives (3rd person) and I can truly appreciate how both Ari and Josh are both flawed characters and deal with their own interpersonal struggles. The hate-at-first-sight to kinda-friends to oh-wait-are-we-lovers banter was fantastic!

I find the miscommunication trope frustrating, BUT given it's at a time when Ari is incredibly vulnerable, I do feel like it served its purpose here. And at a certain point it felt like Ari's character redemption arc dragged on just a liiittle bit too long for my taste.

This book had its moments but overall I found the characters (particularly Josh and his sister, Briar) to be unlikable. It was actually really lovely to see Josh and Ari become friends while they were at their worst, when they needed someone they could be sad with. Other than that, a lot of their dynamic was frustrating and weirdly antagonistic, especially when that antagonism came from brief interactions with large time jumps in between.

These people are kinda (well, not kinda) the worst, but… I still liked watching them find each other? Sort of? They have some serious issues, and we see them (sort of) work it all out throughout the book, leaning on each other as they've never leaned on others for one reason or another. But the problem remains: They're pretty deplorable. Glad they got their happy ending, and it's not Josh and Ari's fault they're terrible people, but… oh wait. It is. Books about awful people aren't necessarily doomed to failure, but it does highlight the worst parts of them, and in this case, just made me want to rewatch When Harry Met Sally :) Not a complete disappointment of a romance! Which is pretty good given the expectations I had via other reviews.

Oh, and Ari seriously needs to find a personality or hobby or whatever beyond simply sex.

If you like the movie When Harry Met Sally, this is basically a modernized and expanded book version with more sex jokes. I was in the mood for an autumn slow-burn romance in New York, and this hit the spot, really. It was neat to see how the characters' relationships and views changed as time and events went by, and their mistakes were understandable, if painful to read at times. I did get a little tired of the reliance on sex jokes for humor, but I think that's my biggest critique. I listened to this on audiobook and would recommend it, I really like this narrator.

My favorite romantic comedy of all time is When Harry Met Sally...so, this book was essentially written for me, so I'm not surprised that it kept me laughing and swooning throughout. I tabbed this one like crazy and my annotations are pretty unhinged- i wrote a paragraph of nonsense at the end of the third act breakup. I feel like this would've been a 5 star for me but at times I felt it dragging, or maybe it is just that it takes me longer to read thicc books lately, so maybe it isn't entirely the book's fault. I'll be rounding up to 5 on goodreads anyway.

Taylor Swift songs: “you are in love (tv)”
-surprisingly this was a Swiftie book! I counted at least 4 Taylor references in the book!

Age rating: 18+ (2 spicy scenes, 1/5🌶️, but lots of raunchy/sexual humor throughout)

This was a delightfully messy queer, gender-bent “when Harry met Sally”. The FMC is pansexual, and she is more like Harry’s character, since she is a polyamorous relationship-phobe. It also has way more banter and raunchy humor than WHMS. I mean messy as in showing the messy sides of human nature and real life. The characters are so real, with real-world issues, fears, quirks, and insecurities. For example, they met when they found out they were both hooking up with the same girl. Like how funny and messy and real is that? I’ve seen a lot of criticisms of this book saying that the main characters are “unlikable” or “too messy”, but I disagree. Characters, like people, are not perfect, they’re messy, and they show and have the worst parts of ourselves. But I thought it was quite beautiful seeing these two flawed people find love, comfort, and acceptance in each other and growing in their connection to one another. Like the book says, love isn’t just being with the person that makes you happ,y, it’s about choosing a person you would want to be with you at your darkest times. This book really shows that.

All of these added elements really helped to modernize the story! Also, having it as a whole novel allowed for much deeper and further character explanation and development!

It is omniscient third person, and it switches back and forth between focusing on each character quite a bit. It makes it feel more like a movie! I saw the whole thing playing out in my head.

Overall, if you are a WHMS fan, you would LOVE this!

TW: lots of drug and alcohol use, divorce/grief, abandonment trauma, lots of explicit sexual references throughout
