As a collection it was a bit scattered for my taste, 2 stories that go together then jump to a crossover jump back to Gotham.

I know it's early days, and I know there are art and costume problems, but darn it I just love ladies helping ladies SO MUCH.

PS Saw Greg Land's name on the front and was wondering if I'd read it wrong when I got to the last issue.

Part of my massive Barbara Gordon Re-read which I had a glorious amazing time with. Birds of Prey, under the hands of Chuck Dixon, got it's first big push into existing, gorgeously, and I continue to love it deeply!

In my efforts to get into comics, I was drawn to this one because it brought together a collection of strong female superheroes, some of whom I was familiar with from other media and some of whom I knew nothing about. I was disappointed to find that that all of the writers and most of the artists involved were men and that the women were still drawn in over-sexualized, impossibly contorted ways. I also found some of the character's dialogue and motivations shallow. In the Manhunt arc: Really? You couldn't think of a worse thing a man could do to a woman than not call her for a second date? I could think of a thousand better motivations for Black Canary to want to hunt this guy down. Also, how many times do you need to use the word "mad-on" to describe a grudge against someone? Once was okay but by time # 3 I began to wonder, Is anger such a masculine emotion that you can only describe it using a bastardized version of the word "hard-on"?
All in all, this book served as a good introduction to Oracle, Black Canary, and several others but falls prey to many of the pitfalls of the comic book industry, even though it at first seemed like a book about women, for women.

The beginning of Birds of Prey with Black Canary and Batgirl/Oracle. This also has some Huntress and Catwoman in it! Good stuff.

This early arc has good elements, but hasn't quite found it's groove yet.

We talk about this and the Birds of Prey in general on a special episode of the All the Books Show: https://soundcloud.com/allthebooks/episode-234-birds-of-prey

I really wanted like this more but as you can see, it took me soooo long to finish it. I just couldn't get into or get attached to some of my faves bc when the writing wasn't kinda bland, it was about plots I couldn't care less about. I adore Babs, Helena, Dinah and Selina but there wasn't enough camaraderie or character development here. The best parts are when Dinah and Babs are working out the kinks in their partnership.

However, I think I would've enjoyed this a lot more had I not read Gail Simone's books first. Reading about them at a time when they're already a well oiled machine made it harder to start right at the beginning.
