i feel dirty giving this a 5 star review, but i also think that it deserves nothing less. it does it’s job perfectly; it makes you uncomfortable while still drawing you into the story, and is so very beautifully written. while there was a constant pit of disgust in my stomach, i enjoyed finding all the moments where the true nature of the “relationship” shone through HH’s unreliable narration.

I really tried to get through this book because it was touted as good litEraTuRe. But I wanted to vomit the entire 15% that I read and I cannot go any further. Kudos to all of those who can finish this book

Horrifying content but form is brilliant. When looking at the writing only this is a masterpiece. But the content makes it impossible for me to rate this higher.

Going into this book I was worried at what view it would take on the obviously appalling nature of Humber’s Humber, however the author made it clear through his writing and notes that this was something rightfully viewed as disgusting. It was well paced, informative and an enjoyable (if that is the right word) narrative. The only trouble being that frequently, the author would speak in untranslated French and even with my rusty skills, google translate was often in play. A heart wrenching exploration of betrayal, trauma and lust.
