As my first T Kingfisher book, I’m incredibly impressed. It was a bit slow to start, but once it picked up, it was going by quickly, especially once you hit the halfway mark. Those last few chapters were tense.

It was a bittersweet ending, but the story itself was fairly easy to follow, even if you’ve never read the original Poe story. I’m looking forward to reading more of T Kingfisher’s books.

Easton arrives at their friends estate in the countryside after receiving a letter informing them of the illness afflicting their family. Finding both siblings ailing in a decrepit manor, they set about doing what they can to help their friends recover from a mystery illness. Throw in an American field surgeon, an English mycologist, a proper valet, and creepy hares and you have a fabulous gothic mystery
