I hated Choal by the end of Queen of Shadows but he has redeemed himself. I read this in tandem with Empire of Storms. EOS was slow for me most of the book but the end of Empire of Storms obviously gripped me more than the end of TOD. However, because I liked this book overall I gave it 5 ⭐️ compared to 4 ⭐️ for EOS.

Favorite Characters:
Choal Westfall and Yrene Towers

Favorite Quote:
“Aelin frightens everyone… But not him. I think that’s why she fell in love with him, against her best intentions. Rowan beheld all Aelin was and is, and he was not afraid.”

Similar to Empire of Storms, the series has turned from fantasy with a romance subplot to full on romantasy. The romance plots are probably the most interesting part of the book.

This book is far more character driven than plot driven - the rest of the series seems to better balance plot and character growth. The first part of the book is a bit of a slog, with things picking up in the second half (although the ending felt a little drawn out). Reading in tandem with Empire of Storms certainly improved the reading experience.

Overall, not as gripping as the other books in the series.

I read this before empire of storms. Hard to get into. Good character development.
