It's very interesting story, just very slow. I wouldn't say it's fantasy, those few bits it had barely had impact on the story. But it's magical and atmospheric. The way whoe plot came together at the end was worth going throuh slow pace of the book.

I really loved this book. The magic of the language transported me truly into another world. The writing reminds me of The Night Circus and I loved every page

So long-winded that I did not care what happened when things "finally started getting good," where good in this instance = mediocre & overly-descriptive. Was there a required page or word count on this book that made it terribly long with so few plot points?

Normally I am drawn to fables and ANY kind of magic, big or small, in the books I read. But oh boy, this was not my cup of tea. This tea was WEAK, lacking any sort of interesting occurrences that would make telling the story from 12 points of view warranted. I love a character-driven novel, so I'm not saying MORE ACTION MORE MORE MORE, but I am saying that there needs to be a little more substance to make the characters' shifting perspectives compelling enough to finish. (Though I did like the stories behind Mr Armstrong & Bess.)

I just wanted to finish, hoping that something would happen to change my opinion and understand all the 5-star reviews from the Goodreads community! Nope. But at least I finished.

Anne? Amelia? Alice?

A fantastically thinking mystical mystery novel. It ties everything up in knots in the middle and untangles it strand by strand towards the end. Beautifully written.

Sometimes a little difficult to remember characters names from early in the book, but names are incredibly significant throughout so make sure to pay close attention to them.
