Summertime Rendering is a story of doppelgangers and what to do when they want to take over your life. I thought the fast-paced sequences were interesting and kept the reader on their toes about what would happen next. There was definitely a lot of gore which feels as if it contradicts the cover. If I didn't know what the series was about before diving into it, I would have assumed it was about teens on a swim team. It's not if you were wondering.
The characters were all teens with complicated relationships with one another. I definitely felt weird about Mio liking her brother-like figure and also how it felt like they wanted to sexualize Mio by showing her take a shower. I think without that, the story would have been much better for me.
I'm really hoping that in the later volumes, the characters will be more fleshed out. I know it's only volume one, but I didn't really love any of the characters nor felt like I knew them. I suppose it needed to jam-pack as much information as it could while still keeping up with the fast-paced thrill of seeing people get stabbed. Regardless, I'll give the next volume a go to see if I'll be sticking with the series.

This book is a good mix of slice of life, thriller and science fiction. Think of things like the shows LOST, Twin Peaks, or anything else with a somewhat geographically limited yet full of supernatural mystery type of narrative that’s not fully divorced from reality. If anything, toward the end of this initial volume some things get a little messy and confusing but I think that’s intentional as it’s a volume 1 and there’s at least 6 volumes already available in English (2 in 1 compared to the original Japanese volumes) if you get intrigued by the series. It will all mostly be explained as it progresses hopefully.
Graphic: Child death, Death, Violence, Blood, Grief, and Murder
Moderate: Body horror, Confinement, Emotional abuse, Sexual content, Kidnapping, and Fire/Fire injury
The body horror, violence, murder, child death, grief and all the other triggers I have mentioned have to do with the central mystery elements so decide ahead of time whether you’re ok or not with the triggers. It’s an excellent supernatural mystery series. I can’t wait to get to the other volumes.
