Wow. I don’t normally lean toward western inspired stories. And I have to admit, I almost gave up on this one. It was just moving too slow for me. And I wasn’t going to rate it more than a 3. BUT the second half of the book hooked me and did not let me go. My heart was saddened and angered for these characters and the circumstances they had ended up in. The conclusions to Annette and Ingrid’s stories had me close to tears.
I would’ve loved to have more time to experience what the second half of the book had to offer. I have a feeling this story will stick with me for awhile.

I loved these characters and this story. Could be intense at times but worth the read 100%

Even if you’re not into Westerns, you’ll want to explore this book for the 1st person perspective that is as philosophical as it is gritty and real. This was excellently written. I loved the way the author explored LGBTQ+ themes in an 1880s American backdrop. By the end, Jesse transcends all social gender norms and is simply defined by her character: determined, strong, courageous. Loved this read.

Very gritty Western, lots of violence, but great character building. Jessalyn is super tough, it's hard to believe she wasn't discovered impersonating a man, but quite a journey.
