I think teen boys will enjoy this series, but a cyclone that blows a girl's clothes off caused some eye rolling on my part.

Recca will only become master to one who can beat him in a fight, until he decides to make a pretty girl at school who has secret healing powers his master solely because her character makes her worth serving. The tomboy rival who has a crush on Recca and the thug who has a crush on the tomboy are our side characters, as well as a woman who cannot kill herself no matter how hard she tries (Recca is the Chosen One to kill her. And she isn't his mom or anything. Couldn't be. Not hinted at at all.)

I loved the anime so much, but it only has 42 episodes. I decided to try the manga because I really wanted to know how the story had ended, I must say it did not disappoint me and how I wish that I could read it again for the very first time.

Flame of Recca is my first favorite anime TV show, so I will always be fond of anything that has to do with this series. I do feel bad that I never thought to read the manga until now. It's not as well-drawn as the anime, but the imaginative story surely makes up for it. So I am reading this as I watch the anime.

SpoilerIn Chapter 1, Recca meets Yanagi, and they both learn each other's secret: Yanagi has the power to heal while Recca can produce flames from his hand.

In Chapter 2, a woman named Kage Hoshi shows up in creepily and demands a show of talents, especially by Recca. Recca refuses, so Kage Hoshi injures Yanagi. Kage Hoshi then leaves.

In Chapter 3, the entire high school now knows that Recca has become Yanagi's ninja, much to the dismay of Domon and Fuko, who both believe Yanagi must've beaten Recca, something they both haven't done.

In Chapter, 4, Fuko is enraged that Recca is now Yanagi's ninja, so she challenges Yanagi to a fight. However, Yanagi seems to be a pacifist, which makes Fuko ever more angry especially after Recca explains that Yanagi never had to beat him a fight; he simply saw her as his ideal image of a master. Later that day, Kage Hoshi finds Fuko and tells her she can help her win against Recca.

In Chapter 5, Kage Hoshi gives Fuko the Fuujin, a gauntlet that lets her control wind. Fuko disappears from school for a few days, which worries everyone. Recca gets a phone call from Fuko, which prompts him to go to the school that night to see what's up. Fuko demonstrates the power of the Fuujin to a shocked Recca.

In Chapter 6, Fuko begins attacking Recca using the Fuujin. Kage Hoshi shows up, and Recca knows she had something to do with Fuko's state. Yanagi learns that Recca is at school and rushes over there. Kage Hoshi explains that one side effect of the Fuujin is the wearer becomes mind controlled after prolonged use. Yanagi is intercepted and knocked out by Kage Hoshi, but Domon shows up. He also appears to aid Recca.

In Chapter 7, Domon and Recca fight Fuko. Domon tries to get Fuko back to reality, which she does for a moment, but slips back into her mind controlled state. Together, Recca and Domon realize that they need to destroy the crystal on the Fuujin in order to get Fuko back.

In Chapter 8, Recca reveals his fire power, and manages to crack the crystal. Fuko creates a whirlwind around herself. However, to sustain that strong wind, she is unable to breathe inside it. Knowing how stubborn she is, Domon and Recca realize that if she doesn't stop, she could die. Domon sees an entrance from the top of the whirlwind, which Recca then uses to completely destroy the crystal.

In Chapter 9, the crystal on the Fuujin shatters, along with Fuko's uniform and bra. Fan service right there. Kage Hoshi shows them that she cannot die by slicing her throat and surviving. She leaves, but not before cryptically saying that Recca is the only family she has left.

Spoiler50 - Saicho and Recca fight using paper and fire.

51 - Saicho uses a thousand paper cranes to attack Recca all at once, but Recca summons Nadare's fireballs from the ground, incinerating all the cranes. Saicho loses; he has a heart condition and cannot fight for more than 15 minutes. Even though Team Hokage wins, Recca challenges Kukai to one final round.

52 - Kukai the Buddha seems calm and unaffected by two of Recca's hits. On the third, his demon side comes out.

53 - Kukai is beating Recca. However, Recca summons a third dragon, Homura. This creates rings of fire around his arm.

54 - Team Hokage advances to the second match for the next day. Kurei greets them after the match and the two brothers have an icy confrontation. Recca, Yanagi, and Fuuko learn that tomorrow, they will be fighting Uruha Maboroshi.

55 - Because of Recca's antics yesterday, the arena is being reconstructed so the fight is pushed back. Fuuko tours the castle with Raiha, one of Kurei's mild-mannered Uruha member. However, she disobeys him and gets trapped. The fight against Uruho Maboroshi is starting but Fuuko hasn't shown up yet. The first opponent is Shiju, a monster who defeated and then ate all five opponents yesterday. Recca, Domon, and Mikagami are the only fighters in Team Hokage, but at the last second, Kaoru Koganei volunteers to join the team in place of Fuuko.

56 - Team Hokage accepts Koganei and he fights Shiju first, partly because the rest are scared of Shiju and because Recca doesn't want to be betrayed at the last minute.

57 - Genjuro uses psychic surgery to level up Shiju, who has lion DNA mixed into him. Koganei beats Shiju by transforming his Kougun Anki into a bow and arrow.

58 - Genjuro suggests that the winner of the first round continue on to the second. That means Koganei has to fight again. Team Hokage accepts. However, it is revealed that the second opponent is none other than Nagai himself, Koganei's former partner. Koganei mistakenly turns his back on Nagai, who uses that opportunity to transform into a tree and engulf Koganei.

59 - Koganei, now swallowed by Nagai, lost the second round. Mikagami goes on to battle Nagai on the third, switching with Recca. Perhaps that instead of attacking Nagai with fire, Mikagami's sword will have a better chance of rescuing Koganei.

Spoiler
68 - Kurei visits his adoptive mother Tsukino. Koran had implanted a
bomb inside her, and Kurei, not wanting her to die, is controlled by Koran this way.

69 - Recca trains outside while the others are sleeping. He sees Yanagi and Mikagami walking. Mikagami asks Yanagi if she likes Recca and realizes she really does. That morning, Team Hokage battles Uruha Oto.

70 - There is clearly strife between Recca and Mikagami and everyone notices this. First round is Domon vs Aki, who uses Kotodama to create illusions just by saying them.

71 - Domon tries to use Aki's Kotodama against her. Fuuko helps him break out of the illusions by telling him it's not real or that she'll give him a kiss if he wins. He uses the Kuchibashi on Aki.

72 - Neon and Miki challenge Recca and Mikagami to a tandem fight, knowing there is hostility between the two Hokage members. Miki moves at lightning speed because of her Idaten madougu. Neon uses Fukyo Waon with her flute to attack.

73 - Miki also uses Yamabiki to reflect Neon's sound, letting them get more hits. Recca and Mikagami's inability to cooperate is even more of advantage to Miki and Neon.

74 - Domon stepped into the ring to save Recca and Mikagami from imminent death. He gets disqualified and loses his previous win. Domon and Fuuko smack some sense in Recca and Mikagami anyway, reminding them that Yanagi is at stake. They finally cooperate.

75 - Mikagami figured out Neon's attacks just by experiencing them once. Neon decides to use all her life force to destroy the arena.

76 - Mikagami uses Tsurara Mai, icicles that pop out from the ground, to destroy Neon's Fukyo Waon. Recca uses Madoka to create a barrier around Neon to save her since he feels bad for her. Team Hokage wins against Uruha Oto.

77 - Neon warns them that their next opponent is Uruha Kurogane, headed by Jisho, the strongest guy in Uruha. Hokage watches Uruha Kurogane vs Uruha Ma, where Jisho is battling a masked fighter named Magensha, who has defeated three members of Kurogane. Magensha has a canon madougu that uses corpses as ammunition; it kills Jisho.

Interesting manga about a young man (Recca) who wants to be a ninja. In this volume, he finds his princess, fellow student Yanagi Sakoshita, to whom he pledges his undying loyalty. This irks his fellow classmates, because Recca has always said he would be the slave of the first person who could beat him in combat. Particularly upset are lifelong friend Fuko Kirisawa, who has fought with Recca since they were children, and classmate Domon Ishijima, who is jealous of the attention that Fuko lavishes on Recca. Added to the mix is Kagehoshi, Mistress of the Shadows, who claims that Recca is the one destined to kill her.

Not the most engaging first volumes of manga I have read, but there is enough there to keep me reading to see how this story ends.

I've read this manga series many years ago, and I've read the series again and again since then. What I like about this series is that there's not much of an annoying characters, well they could be annoying but on the understandable level. The drawing isn't the most beautiful and to be honest I was a bit turn off when I open the first page but as I continue to read I started loving it, the story was great and I couldn't care anymore if they wasn't as great I wish. I love the action, the adventures and the twist of the story.
