A sci-fi classic. I've blown this off for years thinking I knew enough by how elements have trickled down into pop culture. However after watching the two new movies, I decided to give the book a chance. I see now why it is a classic that so many other sci-fi franchises draw from. It largely holds up. Of course as a book from the 60s, there are elements that are a little cringe to a modern reader and there are elements and small plot lines that could have been cut for the sake of brevity, but over all I was impressed with the book. I think it helped that the audiobook had a full cast to help me keep track of who was who. I suspect some of the minor characters may have blended together otherwise.

I finally read Dune! It's been on my list for a while, and I'm so happy I can finally cross it off my list. I'm really glad I saw the movie first, or the huge info dump in the beginning would have been overwhelming for me. We took the audiobook camping, and let me tell you, listening to it every night around the campfire is a top tier experience! And the one I had was a full cast, which was fabulous.

I found sections of the book really slow, mostly because all of the possible tension was erased. What is the plot and who is the betrayer?? Oh don't worry, we revealed that four hours ago. I think keeping the intrigue would have helped a lot. Especially with Paul, as he reveals basically everything about himself not even halfway through the book. I know I saw the movie first, so I knew some things going in already, but some more secrets and tension still would have kept me guessing.

And I'm interested to keep reading more!

World building was a bit confusing at first but the pace is slow enough that it makes more sense as you get further into the book. The story is captivating and the writing style is enjoyable.

Listened to this after I watched the first movie. If I wouldn’t have watched it, I think I would have been even more confused more.
