I wanted to like this book more than I did - while it doesn't edge into magic-realism, the characters use of fairytales and folk stories to process their emotions and grief was lovely. The one major thing that I took from this book was - just be straightforward with people so that they don't have to spend 560 pages very slowly trying to find things out that you could have easily told them. It took such a long time for Esther to not only start her search for answers over her sister's death, but then to bloody progress it in Copenhagen and then the further endless delay in the Faroe Islands. I know she's grieving and all that but for the love of god. AND ANOTHER THING
Spoilerthat romance with her sister's former partner/father of her child WHYYY. Yes good idea Esther, fall in love with a bloke that will leave you constantly questioning whether his feelings for you match those he had for your sister, that's definitely going to help you move on. And the only character who suggests that this is an idiotic idea bound to end in tears ends up being forlornly sorry for thinking such a thing.
I mean clearly this is a well-written book with some very vivid characters, given the sense of frustration I have with their choices - I'd just rather not be frustrated at the end of a book.

This book is beautiful. Poetic, moving, and full of emotions. I love Holly Ringland’s ability to give you an unlikeable character who grows into someone you care for so deeply.

This book touches heavily on grief, but has lots of quotes and dialogue that I think will stick with me and help me through future grief I will suffer. I really loved this book.
