This book was so good and so sad. I started this on audiobook before I left for Taiwan then finished it on the plane. I wouldn’t recommend doing that since it involves a plane crash.
Yahaira and Camino Rios’ dad dies in a plane crash. They don’t know they’re sisters because their dad married two women. Yahaira and her mom live in NY, and Camino and her aunt live in the Dominican Republic. Camino’s mom died a decade ago, and her mom was actually friends with Yahaira’s mom previously.
This book does a good job of exploring grief. It’s YA, probably because the girls are in high school, but it definitely doesn’t feel young to me.

god, i love books written in verse. and i LOVE elizabeth acevedo's writing.

this book was devastating and emotional. i cannot imagine losing a parent, nor can i imagine finding out that said parent was hiding an entire second life, wife, and child.

Camino and Yahaira were so valid in their grief and their grieving process. they felt so deeply and it was easy to feel along with them. i was so nervous for the girls to meet each other but i was so happy with how their relationship blossomed. my sisters are so important to me and i'm so glad that Camino and Yahaira were able to form a bond, even in spite of their grief and the knowledge that their father had two lives.

i 100% recommend this book.

I've heard praises for this book for a while and I totally see why. I went in not remembering much of what people have said other than It's great and about sisters who don't know about each other, so I assumed it was mostly about them meeting and so forth, but that is hardly the tip of the iceberg. So much more, this is about grief, family, and home. It really gets at parts of what it's like to love and grieve a complicated person. And it says some really beautiful things about family and community-- the importance of interdependence. There are also parts that deal with misogynistic violence, as well as poverty. It's, among many other things, a shining example of why YA as a genre shouldn't be underestimated. Incredible!
