Read trigger warnings before you read this book. I heard about this on booktok. I’m not normally into dark romance with military MC. While the teenage romance was rather cringe-worthy, I didn’t find it too out of the norm for a teenage/new adult love. I liked that Vivian was a successful, yet struggling, person. She was very relatable. Corbin was sweet but I didn’t feel the same level of sympathy for him. Overall, good book and some very thought provoking passages.

If you're not into BDSM, don't read this book. I really liked 50 Shades of Grey, but the bdsm in this book is super cringe.

I give this 2 stars instead of 1, because I enjoyed the first part of this duet.

This book was recommended to me, and I loved the first half of this duet. It had such promise in the beginning. It wasn't until after the second half of the duet started that I realized I was not going to like this book anymore. I almost DNF a dozen times.

In the first book, he called her baby girl a little too often for me. It was super hot at first, but it's got annoying quick. Other than that, I enjoyed the first half. It was love at first sight and all that. Really sweet.

The jump to the future in book 2 threw me. Her sudden interest in BDSM 10 years after her rape and their subsequent divorce was super weird to me since she was super innocent and virginal when she met Corbin. Why does she all of a sudden have an interest in BDSM when she hasn't even had sex with anyone else in over 10 years after she was raped?

Part of the onboard screening to become a member of a BDSM club where she lives is to go to a therapist who specializes in this area and works with the club/is part owner. While in therapy, she re-lives her entire life, including the meeting, dating, and marrying of Corbin. As soon as the therapist found out that Corbin, a co-owner of this BDSM club he was co-owner of, a friend of his, and one of his patients, was her ex-husband, that was immediately conflict of interest and he should have removed himself off her case, at the very least, but should have denied her access to the club completely and recommended her to another therapist. But of course, he didn't do any of these things. He continued on as if nothing had happened. And by the way, Corbin, as well as the other 2 co-owners, had full access to the videos of ALL of her sessions. So that's all super red flag to me.

Anyway, we discover during her therapy sessions, all the ins and outs of everything that happened. So, like... I am left with "Why did she tell him she cheated on him instead of that she got assaulted?" That's dumb, no matter what he would have done to the other guy. She said she didn't tell him she was raped because she knew equavacally that Corbin would have killed the dude and that he'd spend the rest of his life in jail, so I mean, I get that, but why tell him ANYTHING if that's the case? Like... if you fear what he'll do if he knows the guy raped you... Just don't say anything at all . Don't tell him the one thing that you know will end the marriage. But she said she HAD to tell him something happened because she couldn't live with the guilt that he was no longer the only man that had touched her 🙄 CRINGE.

During one of their sessions, she begins to have a panic attack. The therapist knows that she has a Submissive nature, so when she is in full-blown attack mode, he grabs her, bends her over his lap, and SPANKS HER. Then, seats her back in her seat like nothing happened, and makes her proceed with her story. AND SHE GOES ALONG WITH IT.

So after her 4 sessions, the therapist approves her to become a member.

Can we pause just for a second to think about the fact that this rape victim becomes a Submissive in a BDSM club? They explain in the book why it's normal and natural for rape Survivors to lean towards this type of lifestyle, but I don't buy it. It's absurd and far-fetched to me.

The guy/Dom who she's spoken with for over a year to learn the ins and outs of the BDSM world for her books, is Seven, but when Corbin finds out about her going, he takes over pretending to be Seven for over a month.

Now, the therapist knows that Corbin is pretending to be Seven. The therapist knows that Corbin will be the Dom who works with her in the club. The therapist knows that Corbin has stalked her for the entirety of their divorced time apart (over 10 years). AND HE IS A-OK WITH ALL OF IT. Now Corbin is betraying her by pretending to be someone she has put trust into, the one person she's felt she's been able to open up to in over 10 years. To me, this is all red flags and cringe left and right. Such betrayal and conflicts of interest.

So Corbin is her Dom, while he is still pretending to be Seven. As part of her "therapy," they have to re-enact her rape. In doing this, she starts to lose it, and Corbin, in the middle of this sexual situation, with his pants down and hard cock out, rips off his mask, showing her it's really him, in his mind, as a way to calm her down.

You would think that if you are a rape survivor, in a sexual situation where you are re-enacting your rape to try and retrain your brain about what happened to give you the power in the situation, but instead the opposite is happening and you're having a panic attack and mental break down, and suddenly the Dom you are working with who you think is one person, suddenly shows himself to be your ex-husband, you'd lose your shit. You'd feel betrayed, embarrassed, discouraged, mortified, etc etc. I wouldn't be able to live with myself, much less ever look him in the face again.

NOPE. NOT THIS CHICK.

You guessed it. SHE FORGIVES HIM INSTANTLY. Like nothing has happened. FURTHERMORE, after he removes his mask, they continue on and MAKE LOVE, and she orgasms multiple times.

LIKE WHAT?!

So after they're done, the therapist calls them both in because he suspects she's in shock, and after an hour or so, she has a breakdown because the shock wore off.

But then we jump a few months into the future, and they're back together. LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED.

I saw this book on TikTok and it sounded so different than what actually was going on in the story. So many red flags! The beginning seemed okay enough, the beginning of Vivian & Corbin’s love story. Sure, it moved crazy fast, but that’s not a make or break for me. But then the rest just kept getting worse and worse as it went on.
🚩 therapy sessions were recorded. No way in hell.
🚩 the therapist spanked her out of a panic attack. Never!
🚩 she lied to her husband and he dropped her like a bad habit
🚩 mega stalking! TEN YEARS OF STALKING!!!!!

I could go on and on!

And I have read BDSM stories before, and they were done really well. This story was just a big fat nope nope nope for me.

the prologue did cause me anxiety while reading while im not usually triggered I think it being in the prologue is what spiked my anxiety waiting for the other shoe to drop so i did have to skim about 150 pages for my sanity but i did go back and reread it after i got to the end so take my rating with a hint of salt. I think it was a new experience to read about therapy sessions, the healing process of the heroine, and how there was a good understanding of BDSM. I did like that there was an HEA and I have read other books with BDSM but not like this it had a more in depth understanding of it which i liked. I loved reading about their story from before i do wish the ending could have been longer.

This was a very emotional book for me, and I cried so much for Vivian. But I absolutely love how the author handled such a serious situation.

While I definitely think some parts were unrealistic (Vi taking Corbin back so fast) this is a fiction book. So I really can’t complain.

3/5 surprisingly for a book involving bdsm, I felt this was very tame. Like the sex between the two was hot, but the actual scenes weren’t that descriptive. However I think that was the authors choice, and I didn’t feel like it took away from the story.

It was incredibly fast paced at the beginning and I was very much ready to stop reading. But I’m really glad I kept going. It was the perfect amount of smut to romance ratio for me

DNF. Prologue opened up w SA and it was beyond uncomfortable to read.

Saw the author’s TikTok on this duet and from the video it seemed interesting but I really wish the author included a trigger warning

Was recommended this book by BookTok but it was just ok. Super easy read, spicy at times, and cringey at others. I could read it again, but I’ve also read much better fanfiction.
