FANTASTIC. In all senses of the word. Twisty, postmodern, chilling, moving, thought-provoking. The smartest novel that will make you cry, the most poignant novel that will make you think really hard about literary structure and tradition and stuff. I'm like the Ancient Mariner with this book -- everyone must read it. And then all the rest of Jennifer Egan. NOW.

‘Part gothic romance, part ghost story, and peppered with Eagan’s insights into the role of communication and loneliness in contemporary life, this is one brainy page-turner that will have you leaving the lights on at night’ iVillage

I was right, I didn't like this book. I didn't like the characters at all and the story was just ok. It was really two stories loosely tied together (or should I say poorly tied together). I did, however, keep reading because I wanted to find out the answers to all the mysteries of the story. By the end, I wasn't really impressed and didn't really care.

This was a gripping read for me! It was faster paced and more plot driven than my normal reads. The tension in it was effective. I definitely could have used some more development and time with some of the characters. But I enjoyed it thoroughly.
