Intriguing but slowly paced. Garp is a mad fellow

i liked the style of writing and story, though it definitely reminded me too much of ‘the last chairlift’. also i found the explicit description of violence and rape quite disturbing. would definitely not reread

I did not like it 😬 Most of the time I was either bored or irritated, interspersed with short periods of false hope that the story might finally be getting interesting.

The writing was engaging, humorous and honestly very skillful, but it doesn’t make up for a story that just didn’t hold my interest at all. I would have DNF’ed after the first chapter if I hadn’t been so curious to know what people actually like about this book (I didn’t find out).

This is a very odd story.  I enjoyed it, but it is weird.  Interspersed with stories written by Garp, we read of his life.   And oddly, lots of plot are particular to todays world…50 years after it was written.  Sad that we really have not come all that far in many aspects.

Sometimes it seemed to me that the author was a little too detailed, when he was describing the story. But otherwise the book was quite well read.
