This book is one that will stay with me a while and I will never be able to think of the gospel song in the same light ever again. There were several points where I put it down and almost didn't pick it back up, but something kept bringing me back. The slow start and some of what felt like unneeded detail with some of the characters are why I couldn't give this one a full 5 stars.

If you love the sprawling, cinematic prose and excellent characterization of writers like Ronald Malfi and Stephen King, this book is for you. While not as wordy as the King, Keisling has a way of making the setting so integral to the story that it almost becomes a character itself. The actual characters themselves are multi-layered and sympathetic and, at times, I felt so badly for them. Definitely check your triggers, as there are some heavy hitters here. 4.75 stars

Started off really strong, but became repetitive and a bit ridiculous towards the end. The last 150 or so pages were difficult to get through.
