3.5/5 stars. I said this about the book to a friend earlier, and I think it rings true: “I feel like it is kind of mismarketed. It’s a great character study, and Kiley Reid obviously had a good time getting to know the individual players, but the language of the summary makes it feel like it’ll be more plot-driven. It’s a slow burn for sure. I think how it’s received will really depend on the reader and what they are wanting from the book.”
Overall, I didn’t feel like the time I spent reading the book was wasted, because I did enjoy things about it. It was pretty accurate to my college girls dorm experience, and the various residents and RA characters felt like someone I probably knew once upon a time. I think that if you read it when you’re in the right mood, it can make for nice nostalgic read with some simmering drama to keep you intrigued!
